Enjoy 8 days of full-on biking on this challenging cross country route linking two Alpine climbing Meccas. With outstanding views of Mont Blanc and the Matterhorn this trip is fully guided with van support for luggage and backup. A real classic with traditional alpine accommodation throughout.
This tour is the natural choice for all mountain bikers who like their riding to be a journey. A long time favourite with hikers, the Chamonix to Zermatt haute route is something very special, giving mountain bikers the chance to link the two most popular high peak climbing destinations in the Alps.
Ride the Alps is the only mountain bike operator offering such a classic route. We have put together a fabulous route which provides awesome views and spectacular descents from the very first day to the very last. After we cross the Col de Balme and come out of France on the first day the entire route is in Switzerland. From Champex a fast single track takes us to the base of the famous Verbier ski resort where the views of the imposing Grand Combin are superb. We use the gondola and take advantage of the relatively empty trails here, in comparison to France, and ride a whole day on perfect single track in this area.
From here we follow the Grand Raid Cristal Alp race route, which winds and climbs it's way over a succession of spectacular passes, the highest of which is the Col de Lona at 2792m, and then descends down to Grimentz. We will be doing this course at a rather more leisurely pace! After the first hard pass we include an easy day up to Tignousa where we are truly in heart of the mountains and very close to Zermatt. From here we conquer the second tough high pass of Illhorn. We then follow varied trails through beautiful rolling scenery to St Niklaus where we are finally in the Zermatt valley. Now a spectacular ending awaits us as we cycle up the valley floor with glimpses of the striking Matterhorn and other big 4000m peaks like the majestic Weisshorn as we ride. Once in Zermatt we take the Sunegga Express funicular or the Gornergrat train up to a high view point for breathtaking, stunning views of the Matterhorn. The descent back into the town and the singletrack route back to St Niklaus give a magical end to this classic route.
